Do you remember when I told you that I wanted to make myself a present?
My present was in Trentino Alto Adige. After a quick search on the web (thanks Google) I was oriented to a Honda Crf 250 2014.
Relatively light, tiny and compact than the other Japanese models.
Among the strengths we can find frame and chassis: practically the bike entered in the roots itself, you just had to take her. Ignition and double muffler.
It was the only 250 4 stroke to have the double silencer, however it was not perfect: among the weak points we have the mapping of injection and the transmission ratio was too short.
For pity’s sake, nothing unrecoverable: a nice aftermarket all opened , a new mapping to the injection and it became totally another bike.
Unfortunately the model that I was about to buy was all stock. The short gears forced always to work with your feet on the bike pegs and this fact on the ramp of the jump could result uncomfortable. Another flaw was the engine that tended to brake too early: a kick in the ass when you cracked the throttle but then you had to switch immediately gear to keep the rhythm.
If you ask to the pilots in the paddock who have a Crf 2014 (the bike we’re talking about right now) they will tell you that it doesn’t have enough horsepower. This statement is not completely wrong, it’s necessary to underline that it based on a comparison on other bike models.
The catchy little jingle is : Honda chassis, Kawasaki horsepower.
I’ve never had the pleasure to try a Kawasaki Kxf, so I bring back this information only by hearsay…maybe one day I will achieve to scrounge to a friend of mine to make two laps in the track and see if the jingle is true.
After these thoughts echoing in my head I attached the trailer to the car and I went to see the bike: once I got on the bike it was hard not to notice the different tonnage between Honda and my old Yamaha YZ 125: the increasing weight was not something trivial but I would have get used to.
Every aesthetic defect of the bike was obscured by the sound coming from the double muffler. Fortunately the owner started the bike because I wouldn’t have even been able to make it run by myself. Compression of the cylinder made the bike much harder to start the bike using the kick starter than YZ. “I had to get used to this too”.
Rims (hubs and lame) were made by Faba, black rim and red hub in ergal, really beautiful.
Pity though that they were really damaged: “Where were you used to ride?” I asked him.
“Pietra Murata, Arco di Trento”… Now everything was way clear.
At Arco di Trento every year there’s one of the stages of the MX world championship. The conditions of the rims explained in itself why Arco di Trento was called “Pietra Murata”: a lot of stones and rocks.
I tried to negotiate on the price and make the price lower because of the rims conditions but he didn’t want to know about that, it was already a really low price compared to the same bike on-line for sale (mmh, he was right, otherwise I wouldn’t have gone there the next day to see the bike): I couldn’t let her go. Usual hand shake and I put it on the trailer. If I’m not wrong I bought it in July 2016 as a present for final high school exam. Till’ December I left the bike as I bought it in Trentino to ride on the track as much as I could during the Autumn.
Well, what can I say, first laps have been a real disaster. It seemed to begin everything from the beginning. In air time the weight of the bike it was felt more than ever than the 125, power output was exactly the opposite because the engine torque was released immediately in the low rpms of the engine. I don’t even want to talk about the corners since the bike kept falling off because of the weight. After I moved lot of mud I began to enjoy that and to get confidence: like everything moreover.
The date fixed was Christmas holidays. Being the MX tracks closed during that period of time, there couldn’t be a better moment to disassemble it in the garage.
By now good or bad I knew where to put my hands on, however the bike had two transformations processes: first idea I came up with was to make it totally black.
- Black racetech plastic kit
- Fat bar renthalbar 28mm
- Red risers in ergal
- A new set of rims FABA
- Anti-breaking red levers
- Red coolant hoses
- Red oversized pegs
I would say that for now could be enough, meanwhile the bike looked like this.
At the end of the project spring was coming, namely the beginning of the MX season: birds tweeting and mufflers screaming till the revving, it was all I wanted.

I cerchi erano completi FABA, canale nero e mozzo rosso in ergal, davvero stupendi.
– Kit plastiche nere Racetech
– Manubrio Renthal Fat Bar 28mm
– Risers in ergal rossi
– Nuova coppia cerchioni FABA (mozzi rossi, canale nero)
– leve anti-rottura rosse
– Tubi radiatore rossi
– Pedane rosso ergal maggiorate
